Myenty Abena: “Wij zijn 1”

“Ik denk dat we langzamerhand af moeten van het onderscheiden van elkaar. Wij zijn 1. Het klopt dat er sommige spelers van buitenaf komen, maar zodra we bij elkaar zijn, is er maar een doel: onder het Surinaamse vlag fungeren. Ik verwacht een positieve samenwerking zonder onderscheid.”

**Heb je een voorkeur qua positie bij Natio? Zo ja, welke?

**“Mijn positie is rechter centrale verdediger. Daar kom ik het best tot mijn recht. Maar als de coach iets anders voor ogen heeft, zal ik daar gehoor aan geven.”

Wie ken je al binnen de selectie van Natio?

**“Ik heb tegen Ryan Koolwijk gespeeld in de Nederlandse en Slowaakse competitie. Ivenzo Comvalius ken ik ook van de Slowaakse competitie en
tegen Nigel Hasselbaink heb ik gespeeld in mijn tijd bij FC Utrecht.”

**Hoe schat je de kansen in van Natio bij de Gold Cup? Ken je de tegenstanders?

**“Er is altijd een kans zolang je met z’n allen een doel voor ogen hebt en gelooft in een goede prestatie. Iedereen weet dat het moeilijk gaat worden. Maar dat geldt ook voor alle andere landen in onze poule. Beide teams, Costa Rica en Jamaica, beschikken over zeer goede spelers die we niet mogen onderschatten. Het worden zeer interessante wedstrijden.”

**Welke persoonlijke doelen heb je jezelf gesteld bij Natio? Onvermijdelijk zijn natuurlijk ook de doelen die je met team wil bereiken…

“**Om zoveel mogelijk wedstrijden te mogen spelen. En om zo belangrijk te zijn voor het elftal. Op teamgebied is ons eerste doel: plaatsing voor het WK. Een mooier doel is er niet.”

**How has your current club, Slovan Bratislava, responded to the fact that you are officially an international player?

**“Everyone was of course very enthusiastic about the fact that I have been selected. Of course I bring a piece of Suriname to Slovakia. More and more people now know where Suriname is located. “

Give a pitch about yourself to the Surinamese football audience.

“My name is Myenty Abena, born on December 12, 1994 in Paramaribo. When I was seven, I moved to my aunt in Moengo, together with my brother. This was because my mother was moving to the Netherlands. In December 2005 I moved to the Netherlands myself. VVIJ from IJsselstein was my first club. Because of my talent, I was advised to play football at Elinkwijk in Utrecht. Two years later I was scouted by FC Utrecht where I played soccer for a total of eight seasons at youth level. Because there was little future for me in the first squad, I continued my career at De Graafschap. Here I was quickly embraced by the supporters and we promoted to the Eredivisie. After six months at the highest level, I seeked for my fortune elsewhere: Spartak Trnava in Slovakia. I won the national cup there, after a wonderful six months. This sparked interest from national champion
SK Slovan Bratislava. I achieved several successes here: national champion, a cup win and placement for European football. I think I could write a book, ha ha. ”**

What went through your mind on November 19, 2019? You probably know what we mean by this.

**“I was very proud of the guys who made it possible. I also think that several people have made a deep bow for this achievement against Nicaragua. ”

How do you envision the cooperation between the diaspora players and the other players?

“I think we should gradually get rid of distinguishing each other. We are 1. It is true that some players come from outside Suriname, but once we are together, there is only one goal: to operate under the Surinamese flag. I expect positive cooperation without distinction. ”

Do you have a preference in terms of position at Natio? If yes, which one?

“My preferred position is central defender (right). That’s where I perform best. But if the coach has something else in mind, I will respond to that. ”

Who do you already know within the selection of Natio?

**“I played against Ryan Koolwijk in the Dutch and Slovakian league. I also know Ivenzo Comvalius from the Slovakian league andI played against Nigel Hasselbaink in my time at FC Utrecht. ”

How do you estimate Natio’s chances at the Gold Cup? Do you know the opponents?

“There is always a chance as long as you all have a goal in mind and believe in a good performance. Everyone knows it is going to be difficult. But that also applies to all other countries in our group. Both teams, Costa Rica and Jamaica, have very good players that we should not underestimate. Very interesting games.”

What personal goals have you set for yourself at Natio? The goals you want to achieve with a team are of course also inevitable …

**“To be able to play as many matches as possible. And to be so important to the team. In terms of team, our first goal is: placement for the World Cup. There is no better goal.”
